HOW THE SOURCE TURBO OPERATES

The Source Turbo performs the important operation of evaporating and purging ethanol in the ethanol extraction process. Traditionally, evaporation for at home extraction has been accomplished by allowing ethanol to naturally evaporate slowly for a couple days or by boiling it off using a heat source. Neither of these options are good because natural evaporation takes far too long and boiling off ethanol with heat destroys the most flavorful and aromatic elements of an extraction, thus, destroying quality. Most concerning, both options fill the surrounding air with very combustible fumes which is wasteful and dangerous. The Source Turbo was designed to address and eliminate these problems.

The Source Turbo is a self-contained closed-loop system that solves old ethanol evaporation problems without cumbersome, difficult to use, expensive lab equipment. Vacuum technology and advanced system controls evaporate ethanol at close to body temperature, between 100°F-105°F under normal operations. The very low operational temperatures preserve the most delicate attributes of an extraction, creating the most high-quality, potent oil possible. Using a combination of vacuum, heat, and outside ambient temperature the vacuum chamber becomes a “cold-trap” and collection vessel to reclaim evaporated ethanol for reuse. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SOURCE TURBO AND OTHER DEVICES?

Extraction vs Infusion

A very common question is “What’s the difference between the Source Turbo and other butter makers and infusion devices?” The difference is enormous and to understand this we must differentiate between “infusion” and “extraction”.  “Infusion” is the act of soaking botanical matter in a large amount of butter or carrier oil (like olive oil) to absorb the botanical oil contained in the plant.  Regardless of claims to the contrary, the butter makers and infusion machines only perform the simple act of infusion resulting in a large volume of fat based carrier with a comparably low potency end product. The same process can be safely and easily accomplished on the stove top, in a slow cooker, or any combination of a vessel and heat source. Many infusion devices appear to be the same products found on Alibaba and Amazon by searching ‘soy bean milk maker’ and are obviously not designed for nor the best method for cannabis, hemp, nor botanical oil production. The devices unnecessarily emulsify the plant matter and carry it into your infusion making thick green goo, and that’s all they do.  The thick green plant matter smells and tastes terrible then causes many people gastric discomfort.  Infusion devices don’t concentrate oil or butter in any way, instead they merely steep the plant material like a slow cooker, allowing the added butter or oil to absorb the CO from the cannabis, leaving the user with no control over potency. On the positive side, these machines are good for beginners as an introduction to making herbal products, they’re affordable, and easy to use.

“Extraction” is entirely different, harvesting only pure oil from cannabis and hemp without added carrier oils, butter, or unnecessary plant material. The user extracts only pure cannabis, hemp, and botanical essential oils. Highly potent, pure concentrates result only from extraction and the Source Turbo is a tool used to do exactly that.  The pure oil from extraction is the base for any form of concentrate: tincture, concentrated tincture, absolute, oil, wax, budder, pull-n-snap, and shatter, edibles, topical and more.  Moreover, using concentrates for cooking provides not only a substantially cleaner and delicious edible but also the ultimate control of potency (Cooking With Concentrates). A larger amount of concentrate can be combined with a small amount of butter to make it ungodly potent, or less can be added to a larger amount of butter to ease the strength as much as desired. Ethanol Extraction Systems: Open vs. Closed Loop vs. Vacuum Assisted Closed Loop

How ethanol is boiled, evaporated, in some cases recaptured for re-use is determined by the type of system is being used. An “open” system simply boils ethanol by applying heat and evaporating the vapor into the open air. Examples of this are old-school methods like using a pot on a hot plate or a rice cooker. This open evaporation approach causes many obvious safety, quality, and affordability problems. When performing extractions, safety is paramount and evaporating ethanol into the air of an enclosed area is very dangerous since those fumes are combustible and will easily ignite. Quality is another problem resulting from the high temperature required to boil ethanol under normal ambient pressure. In an open system ethanol boils at about 173°F which is too high, destroys the delicate and beautiful compounds that define a quality concentrate, and chemically alters its make up limiting post processing options. Hot plates, pots, and rice cookers are inexpensive so many people mistakenly consider this to be the cheapest processing option, however, when all aspects of an extraction are considered there’s an affordability paradox that makes this process one of the most costly. The rice cooker device itself may be inexpensive but ethanol isn’t cheap and letting it evaporate into the air is an enormous waste of money that adds up quickly. Next, the quality, and hence the value, of the final product must be accounted for and the high temperature purge used in open systems will produce the lowest quality medication. Low quality, less potent meds won’t go far, don’t last as long and require you to use more overall, seriously decreasing value. Additionally, the process of openly boiling ethanol requires constant attention and supervision, wasting valuable time you could spend doing something else important or relaxing. The rice cooker and other open system methods may be attractive to a home user because of the low cost but they’re not safe, produce low quality concentrates, and are not the most overall affordable option.

“Closed loop” systems also evaporate ethanol at open atmosphere temperatures of around 173°F, just like a rice cooker, but have the added ability to capture and reclaim some of the evaporated ethanol for reuse. The most popular of these devices are simple alcohol distillers, some dressed up with a sticker claiming to be an “Oil Machine” and charging hundreds of dollars more than the exact same distiller found on Alibaba, Amazon, and Walmart. These devices solve two of the problems associated with open systems to a limited degree. Safety is better because the majority of the alcohol vapor is condensed and collected for reuse, however, most of these devices drain into an open secondary collection vessel with condensers that get overwhelmed by the amount of hot vapor pushed through them allowing a lot of vapor to escape into the open air.  This is a little safer but far from perfect. Average ethanol reclaim with these is around 60%-70% in my experience. An alcohol distiller is more expensive than a rice cooker but because the ethanol is recaptured for reuse it’s a little safer and more affordable in the long-term (as long as you don’t waste money falling for the silly “Oil Machine” sticker scam). Now for the bad news; these machines are designed for alcohol distillation, not oil extraction which creates serious quality and operational problems. Extractions made using a distiller or a rice cooker suffer from the same quality limitations. Distillers also work under normal ambient pressure so the operating temperatures are high and the quality of extract is low. It can also be very frustrating to use because the oil must be removed from fixed vat that was actually designed to hold the waste from alcohol distillation.  Using one is cumbersome, difficult, dangerously hot, and wasteful. For an average at home user, these units are quite large with substantial surface area in the oil collection area and are made to run large amounts of alcohol, so if you need to run a small batch of a couple ounces you’ll have difficulties. Alcohol distillers are an acceptable choice if you’re only making large batches of FECO and willing to sacrifice safety and the quality of oil for the production volume, but that’s really all they’re capable of.

The most advanced systems are “Vacuum Assisted Closed Systems,” and this is where the Source Turbo shines. Adding vacuum to a closed system keeps all of the activity enclosed within a self-contained unit allowing virtually nothing to escape and the low internal pressure allows the Source Turbo to boil and evaporate ethanol at nearly body temperature, with a range of 100°F to 105°F under normal operations. The ability to operate at low temperatures in an enclosed environment solves all the problems of the other devices. It’s safe because everything is recollected internally, allowing no dangerous fumes or odors to escape during operation. In addition to vastly improved safety, the quality of the extraction and concentrates are unmatched. Using such low temperatures for the entire process ensures all the good stuff that was extracted from the plant is saved, protected, and packed into the concentrate. The quality is so tasty, smooth, and potent it’s actually unbelievable and this high-quality is key to great value. Higher quality, more potent medication will go further, last longer, and require you to use less overall, hence seriously increasing value and savings. Contrary to many people’s first impression, even with the retail price of $599, the Source Turbo is the most affordable option for at home extraction. What must be understood about the Source Turbo is the idea of affordability and value is more than just a price tag.     1. A single batch is going to range from 1g-6g of final concentrate depending on a number of considerations. First, the largest determinant of yield is the quality of the material you are working with. If you are working with high quality material there will be much more oil for the alcohol to harvest. Conversely, if you are working with low quality material then it will be impossible to attain high yields. Also, what shape the material is in will also determine how much can be done at one time. If it is fluffy trim it will take much more ethanol to wash the material while broken up dense nugs will require substantially less. The fill line for running on turbo mode is about 300ml and running in normal mode is about 350ml max. Secondly, it depends on how well the crafter performs the extraction. If you take shortcuts or don’t maximize your wash then yields will show it. Third, tolerance for undesirables will effect your yield. If you keep waxes, fats, paraffin (like rosin) then your yields will be higher. However, if you want those gone and winterize/de-wax then the yield will suffer but the quality will increase dramatically. Lastly, it depends on what you are making. If you are making something super clean like a herb extract for vaping then the yield will be lower than a really deep full plant medicinal extraction. The bonus about this process is you can actually perform both of these and double your expected output by making a clean vape extract with a first wash, then using the same plant material, perform a second wash to make a deeper medicinal extract. So, the closest direct answer to your question in terms of yield is from 7%-30% depending on all of those considerations.

  2. I am a beekeeper who is looking for someone who has a Source Turbo (anywhere in southern ON) and would be interested in running a test batch of propolis tincture? I am willing to compensate you for your time and grain alcohol.

  3. I am using a buchner filter at 11 microns after my wash. I notice a powder that collects on top of the filter. Is that quality product or just wax and lipids? Is my filter too fine? What do you recommend and what should I do with this powder? I am making FECO for edibles.

    1. It could be a number of things. It could be plant material particles, trichome stalks/heads, and such. It would only be fats and lipids if you are winterizing. 11 microns is fine. I use medium flow filter paper that is about 12 micron and slow paper that is about 3 micron, so there is no problem with what you are using. While the original material you washed may be run again if it was good material to begin with, assuming that has been separated by straining, anything on the filter is waste material.

      1. There seems to be at least a few centimeters of waste on the filter. I am winterizing some of my wash now after filter as you recommended and will see tomorrow what that brings. It does not look like there is anything after 24 hours. If anything it looks like some of the liquid was in fact water and has frozen vs. wax floating on top. Is there any use for the powder?

      2. Hmmm, frozen water is problematic. Did you use 95%, 190-proof ethanol? Also, the fats and lipid will sink and settle toward the bottom, not float. The powder should be spent and waste material

  4. If the alcohol boils at a lower temperature when under vacuum, would that be the case for everything else such as terps?

    1. Yes, all boiling points are effected, but the curve for ethanol is much steeper relative to the various terp curves the flatten substantially

  5. Forgive this very novice embarrassing question. I have the source turbo and have used it 3 times so far. Works so well by the way. I have this very thick dark material left and just wonder what I can use it for. Just learned about dabs. Limited knowledge and exposure to this kind of end product despite starting my weed use in 1967.

    1. That is the ‘oil’ and is the base of all concentrates. You can use it in many ways. I would suggest reading my other posts here on ExtractCrafter.com because making and using that oil is the point of every post.   6. Hi , i think Ethanol is a controlled substance in Australia , what other alcohol can be used? Will you also ship to australia or have a distributor.?

    1. 99.9% isopropyl can be used but needs to be purged very well. For distribution information you would have to contact the company.

  7. how many times can the ethanol be used over again? it seems to me that once a bottle of alcohol has been opened moisture in the air is absorbed quickly. also so I am going to purchase the Buchner filtration kit on exctractcraft and was wondering what vac pump I could purchase? thanks

    1. Ethanol can be reused as many times as you like, its just evaporation and condensation, just like water. The azeotrope is at 95% so the continued absorption slows there, and the distillation will keep it in that neighborhood anyway. If you have a Source you can just use the pump on the Source to run your Buchner.

  8. okay I think I am ready to pull the trigger, found the best deal a company named lifestyle has the source turbo for 699.00 with all the extras flask, funnel, filters, mat, concentrate holders, etc. and hopefully no tax. so there is this gadget called a hybridxtract extractor kit on that site it uses alcohol and co2 what do you think about it? thanks

    1. I think that hybridxtract equipment so off base absolutely wrong for ethanol extraction that I can’t imagine the person that designed it ever really made many extracts. That thing doesn’t do anything a mason jar won’t do for you.

  9. ok my question is what is the vacuum pressure of the source turbo? I emailed the manufacture and they said enough to boil at 105 temp, so I guess I want to know is what you think the finest filter it could pull tincture thru. thanks

    1. Good question, not sure. I guess the first thing to my mind is if you are performing advanced filtering techniques you would probably want a proper vacuum pump to run the vac chamber for the final product?

    1. unfortunately water does not work in our equipment, only 190 proof or higher non-denatured, food-grade, ethanol

  10. I just got my machine and I’m running my first batch of FECO Full Extract Cannabis Oil today. This was a great article you presented; thorough and super informative. I was already familiar with the Source, since I’ve been making my own cannabis & herbal meds in an alcohol distiller for about 4 years now.

    I’ve been utilizing the GOM thwt you mention, for about 3 years now; was gifted the machine. It has served it’s purpose, and allowed for many batches of oil to be made for myself and other patients, but the Source is definitely a far superior machine, will reclaim much more of my alcohol and is a much safer process for oil making.

    I look forward to utilizing my Source for many other extractions too.

  11. can it do any kind of plant? I’m looking to concentrate a few different kind of tinctures and im not sure if they have oils in it. would it still concentrate the tincture?

So, can my Source Turbo be used to further distill 151 proof Everclear to 190 proof? In BC Canada, sale of 190 proof alcohol is restricted to permits only,

    1. Thank you. You cold to that but it would be painful. To up proof you’d be better with an Airstill of something you can blow though larger volume more quickly, though with lower recovery efficiency
